Alpaca Registry, Inc. (ARI) Registration

Registering your newly born alpacas is very important.  Registration will validate the alpacas pedigree and will track the bloodline that it is bred from.  This validation is achieve through DNA testing, which ARI has conducted since 1998.  Prior to 1998, ARI used blood typing to help validate the parentage of alpacas.  This science based pedigree registry helps to support the value of your alpaca, it alows your alpaca to register into alpaca shows, and in general helps the entire alpaca community by tracking the pedigrees of these alpacas.  When buying alpacas, you should always ensure that they are ARI registered alpacas and verify that the registration certificate that is shown to you is listed in the persons name who is trying to sell it to you.

Costs of Registration

Costs of registration vary, but in general they increase the longer you wait to register the alpaca.  As a result, it is in your best interest to register an alpaca as soon after birth as possible.  ARI recommends that the registration process be started by 2 months of age to ensure timely registration of the alpaca prior to its first show or its sale.

It is important to register every alpaca regardless of whether they are breeding, non-breeding, or gelded.  Registration of all alpacas helps ensure that gaps don't exist in alpaca's pedigrees and helps reduce questions from potential buyers.  In fact even registering geldings is very inexpensive.  For specific prices, please visit Alpaca Registry, Inc.'s web site at www.alpacaregistry.com

Security of Registration

Alpaca Registry, Inc. provides an original certificate to every registered alpaca owner.  Upon sale, that certificate is returned and voided.  ARI also uses a special holographic seal that cannot be removed from the certificate.  Upon removal, the seal destroys itself and the registration certificate is voided.

How Long Does It Take?

It takes approximately 3-5 weeks to receive your new certificate if everything is filled out properly, the blood card sent in, and the registration paid for.  To help ensure quick processing, ARI recommends submitting the registration online because it reduces errors and omissions.
